Saudi Dates Wholesale: The 2026 Buyer’s Guide for Importers and Distributors

Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s largest producers of dates, with tens of millions of palm trees and more than a million tonnes harvested in a typical year. Yet for international buyers — distributors, retailers, food-service groups, and private-label brands — sourcing dates directly from the Kingdom can feel opaque. Which varieties command a premium? What grading should you specify? How does export logistics actually work?

This guide answers those questions from the supply side. Farazm Holdings operates a dates and food export desk from Al Madinah Al Munawwarah — the historic home of the Ajwa date — and this is the framework we walk every new buyer through.

The varieties that matter to importers

Ajwa is the flagship. Grown almost exclusively in the Madinah region, it is dark, soft, and holds deep religious and cultural significance, which sustains premium pricing across the GCC, South Asia, Europe, and North America. Genuine Madinah-origin Ajwa is the single most requested product on our export desk.

Sukkari, from the Qassim region, is golden, caramel-sweet, and the everyday favourite inside Saudi Arabia — an excellent volume product for retail programs. Safawi and Khudri offer strong value for bulk and food-service channels, while Medjool-style large dates serve Western retail formats where size drives shelf appeal.

A practical portfolio for a first-time importer is usually two tiers: a premium line (Ajwa or Medjool-style) for margin, and a volume line (Sukkari or Safawi) for turnover.

Grading, packing, and what to specify

Serious suppliers grade by size (pieces per kilogram), moisture, and defect tolerance. When you request a quotation, specify:

  • Variety and origin — e.g., “Ajwa, Madinah origin” rather than just “Ajwa”
  • Grade / size band — premium, standard, or industrial
  • Pack format — retail cartons (250g–1kg), bulk 5–10kg cartons, or private-label packaging to your artwork
  • Certifications required in your market — halal certification is standard; ask about additional documentation your regulator expects
  • Volume and frequency — one container as a trial, or a scheduled program across the season

Private-label is where importers increasingly build value: your brand, Saudi origin, and packaging compliance handled at source. It typically requires modest minimums per SKU, so raise it early in the conversation.

Logistics: how Saudi dates reach your port

Dates are a resilient product, but quality-sensitive programs (soft premium dates especially) benefit from temperature-controlled containers. Shipments typically move from Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, with transit times of roughly one to two weeks to Gulf and South Asian ports and three to five weeks to Europe and the Americas, depending on routing.

Your supplier should handle export documentation — certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate, halal certification, and commercial documents — and quote you clearly on Incoterms (FOB Jeddah versus CIF your port changes who manages freight and insurance).

Seasonality and when to contract

Harvest runs late summer into autumn, but graded and properly stored dates ship year-round. Two demand peaks dominate the calendar: Ramadan, when dates consumption spikes globally, and the Hajj and Umrah seasons, which drive gifting and retail demand across the Muslim world. Importers targeting Ramadan shelves should contract three to five months ahead — late contracting is the most common and most avoidable mistake we see.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for direct import from Saudi Arabia?

Full-container-load (FCL) programs offer the best economics, but consolidated and part-container arrangements are possible for trial orders. Tell us your target volume and we will structure around it.

How do I verify Ajwa is genuinely from Madinah?

Work with a supplier physically based in Madinah with traceable sourcing, and require origin documentation with your shipment. Price is also a signal — genuine Ajwa commands a premium; offers well below market usually are not what they claim.

Can you produce under our own brand?

Yes — private-label programs covering packaging design compliance, printing, and packing are a core part of our export desk’s work.
